Tetra Pak partners with leading European juice brand to launch new sustainable beverage carton

SWITZERLAND - Tetra Pak has partnered with a major European juice brand to unveil the Tetra Prisma Aseptic 300 Edge, a new beverage carton designed to meet modern consumer preferences while enhancing sustainability. 

This latest offering from Tetra Pak maximizes the use of renewable materials, combining paperboard and plant-based polymers derived from responsibly sourced sugarcane, resulting in a carton that reduces its carbon footprint by 76%.

The collaboration marks a response to growing consumer demand for eco-friendly packaging. According to research by Harvard Business Review, younger consumers are increasingly making environmentally conscious purchasing decisions, favoring products with reduced climate impact. 

The new Tetra Prisma Aseptic 300 Edge carton aligns with these values, achieving over 85% renewable material content. This reduction in carbon emissions has been verified by the Carbon Trust and reflects a cradle-to-grave measurement of the carton, offering a lower environmental footprint compared to traditional packaging.

Ergonomic design for modern consumers

In addition to its sustainability benefits, the Tetra Prisma Aseptic 300 Edge carton has been designed with a distinct look aimed at capturing the attention of young and dynamic consumers. 

Research from Tetra Pak's 2023-2024 Design Trend Forecast reveals that a "less is more" approach is becoming increasingly popular, particularly in an era where consumers are rethinking discretionary spending. 

The carton’s taller, slimmer shape not only delivers a sleek and modern appearance but also improves comfort, especially for smaller hands, making it ideal for on-the-go consumption.

The packaging features a DreamCap 26 Pro tethered closure, designed to minimize product wastage and prevent littering, as the cap remains attached to the carton. This feature ensures that the entire package, including the cap, can be disposed of responsibly after use and recycled with ease. 

Tetra Pak anticipates that this user-friendly and environmentally sound design will resonate with a wide audience, particularly those concerned with reducing environmental waste.

Increased production efficiency and versatility

The Tetra Prisma Aseptic 300 Edge carton offers food and beverage producers greater flexibility in production. 

Available for use on Tetra Pak’s A3/CompactFlex filling machine, the new package can be incorporated into existing production lines with minimal upgrades, adding a fifth packaging configuration to the machine’s capabilities. This allows for quick switching between different packaging sizes and systems, optimizing production efficiency.

Brands can now offer a broader range of packaging solutions tailored to specific consumption needs, whether for dairy products, juices, or functional drinks. This versatility not only enhances consumer choice but also enables producers to cater to diverse market demands without significant changes to their production processes.

Francesco Faella, Vice President of Tetra Pak’s Business Sector Ambient, noted the growing importance of flexibility and sustainability in the food and beverage industry.

Our recent global research shows that environmental concerns are still a priority for 76% of consumers, with over 60% preferring products that have environmentally sound packaging.”

Logistical benefits and reduced shipping costs

The new carton design offers logistical advantages, particularly in transportation. Its taller, slimmer shape allows for the packaging of the same volume of liquid while increasing the number of cartons per pallet by up to 10%. 

This translates into fewer shipments, reducing transportation costs and environmental impact.

With the increasing emphasis on sustainable supply chains, such innovations offer both environmental and financial benefits, making it easier for companies to meet their sustainability goals while maintaining operational efficiency.

Meeting consumer expectations

The introduction of the Tetra Prisma Aseptic 300 Edge carton comes as consumers place growing importance on sustainability. 

Tetra Pak's 2023 consumer research, which surveyed 14,500 respondents across 29 markets, including the United States, Germany, France, South Africa, and China, found that over 60% of consumers prioritize products with environmentally friendly packaging. 

This trend has made packaging a central factor in purchasing decisions, particularly for younger demographics.
