GERMANY - The International Food Container Organization (IFCO) has introduced Marina, a reusable fish crate designed to enhance cold chain management in the seafood industry.
This innovative packaging solution leverages Bluetooth Low Energy tags and QR codes, enabling real-time data collection from fishing boats to retail stores, addressing sustainability and food safety challenges.
A sustainable alternative to EPS
Marina serves as a response to the environmental challenges posed by single-use expanded polystyrene (EPS) boxes, which contribute to microplastic pollution.
With increasing governmental regulations aimed at phasing out EPS, the fishing industry is shifting towards sustainable alternatives. Marina fits seamlessly into this transition, offering a reusable, recyclable solution that can be used up to 120 times.
Available exclusively through the IFCO SmartCycle circular pooling system, Marina enables efficient reuse.
Empty crates can be returned and washed according to international food safety standards, ensuring hygiene and sustainability. This system is designed to simplify the switch to reusable packaging while maintaining the operational needs of the fishing industry.
Innovative features for improved logistics
Marina’s design includes double-wall isothermal construction, offering superior insulation to keep seafood fresh for longer.
The crate’s uniform dimensions allow for compatibility with existing supply chains and automated logistics systems. Additionally, its nestable and stackable design saves space during transport, reducing carbon emissions and improving handling conditions.
The integration of Bluetooth Low Energy tags allows for real-time data tracking throughout the supply chain.
These tags provide critical insights into temperature control and logistics, ensuring product quality from catch to consumer. Smooth crate surfaces minimize spoilage and food loss, further enhancing the efficiency of the seafood supply chain.
“Marina is the result of intense collaboration across the fishing industry. We’ve taken on board the unique demands of every step of the fresh fish and seafood supply chain in our R&D efforts,” Francesca Amadei, Vice President Southern Europe at IFCO, emphasized Marina’s development as a result of extensive collaboration with the fishing industry. .
In addition to Marina, IFCO is also set to launch Nestor, a smart reusable plastic pallet aimed at modernizing the grocery supply chain.
Nestor features a lightweight, nestable design that optimizes transport efficiency. Made from food-grade, contamination-free HDPE, it ensures high hygiene standards and extended use, providing another step forward in sustainable packaging solutions.
